26 July 2019

After hearing really good things about the Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel our writer Rachel McAlley took to the East Yorkshire highway of the M62 and the A63 to find out first hand about all these good things!

The one thing I first noticed when entering the hotel was that there were plenty of people milling around, it was a hub of activity, a busy hotel. There were guests checking in, people drinking in the bar area, a private party in the restaurant, a conference in one of the large adjacent buildings, guests drinking outside under the canopy away from the rain, and plenty of happy staff.

We checked in and were met with wonderful service from the reception team, and this excellent service continued throughout our entire stay from every member of staff that we came into contact with, and we spotted that each and every customer was treated the same, it was universal – all the Mercure Hull employees were nice, friendly, and accommodating to everyone, not just us.

After meeting the general manager and being kindly escorted to our room, we were left to enjoy the hotel and all it had to offer.

After unpacking our suitcases and getting ready for a late lunch, we ventured into the lounge area and enjoyed afternoon tea for two (one adult and one child), with homemade scones that were absolutely delicious. It was an endless round of finger sandwiches, filled with classic favourites including cucumber, salmon and cream cheese, and ham, plus children’s favourites too like egg mayo, chicken, and cheese plus lots of scrummy fresh cream cakes.  Quite a substantial afternoon tea!

Back to our room for a little kid’s afternoon TV, a relaxing shower, to paint our nails and for a cup of tea before relaxing into the early evening. We reserved a table in the restaurant and spent a little time looking around the hotel, pool, gym and grounds before venturing into the lounge, and then for dinner in the restaurant.

I chose mushrooms to start followed by salmon and seasonal veg for my main course, my daughter opted for freshly baked bread and whipped butter followed by sausage, chips and beans. The salmon was cooked perfectly and was served with a good selection of vegetables, including; baby roast potatoes, broad beans, asparagus, fine beans and a creamy hollandaise sauce, it was delicious. For dessert we tried the kids cheese and crackers and the summer pudding for myself – it was an all round great meal.

Back to the room for some more TV, and an in-room cuppa before jumping into bed for a cracking nights sleep.

Breakfast was served in the restaurant, where there was a great selection of hot and cold food on the buffet tables. As with the previous evening, the staff were all full of life, happy to help and wonderfully chatty.

My daughter chose much the same as her evening meal (kid’s eh!), she helped herself to a couple of breakfast sausages, baked beans and she made some toast to enjoy alongside. I tried a little granola with yoghurt and fruit, plus a glass of juice and some hot buttered toast.

We left the hotel full, happy and content. Every element of our overnight stay was wonderful, from the exceptionally good service to the great food and the clean, comfortable, and spacious room.

Prices start at £60 for a classic double or twin room inc breakfast, dinner is an extra charge, and afternoon tea would cost £14.95 (per adult), and £7.50 (per child).
